What is Psychiatry?

Psychiatry is a medical field that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental health disorders. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have completed a residency in mental health and are trained to treat mental health conditions from a medical perspective. They can prescribe medications and provide talk therapy to help patients manage their symptoms. In contrast, therapists provide counseling and support to help patients work through their emotional and mental health challenges. They do not prescribe medication, but they may refer patients to psychiatrists if they believe medication could be helpful.

A typical appointment with a psychiatrist will involve an initial evaluation where the psychiatrist will ask questions about the patient’s medical and psychiatric history, including any medications they are taking. The psychiatrist will also ask about the patient’s symptoms and how they are affecting their daily life. Based on this information, the psychiatrist will develop a treatment plan that may include medication, talk therapy, or a combination of both. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor the patient’s progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.

In contrast, a therapist appointment will typically involve talk therapy only. The therapist will work with the patient to identify their goals for therapy and develop a treatment plan to help them achieve those goals. The therapist will provide support and guidance as the patient works through their emotional and mental health challenges. That’s why Deep Eddy and Deep Centered work together to provide wraparound, integrated care for those we serve.

Our Integrative Approach to Psychiatry

At Deep Eddy and Deep Centered, we believe that everyone deserves access to high-quality mental health care. Our approach to psychiatry is inclusive of all identities, thoughtful, compassionate, and centered on the patient. We understand that mental health conditions can affect anyone, regardless of their background or identity, and we strive to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all of our patients.

Our therapists and psychiatrists work closely together to ensure continuity of care and rapid progress for our patients. As one of our highest values is community, your providers are also close colleagues who spend time outside of work playing frisbee golf or Dungeons & Dragons or any of the other social opportunities our practice provides for our clinicians. The trust shared by our team makes all the difference in your care – but you don’t have to take our word for it.

Our psychiatrists are also selected based on their passion to provide personalized care that takes into account each patient’s unique needs and experiences. We work closely with our patients to develop treatment plans that are tailored to their individual goals and preferences. We believe that the best outcomes are achieved when patients are active participants in their own care, and we encourage open communication and collaboration throughout the treatment process.

We are committed to providing compassionate care that is free from stigma and discrimination. We recognize that mental health conditions can be challenging to manage, and we are here to support our patients every step of the way. Whether you are struggling with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or any other mental health condition, we are here to help.
