Hello!

My name is Maria, and I’m a therapist here at Deep Eddy Psychotherapy. I’m a Certified Daring Wayâ„¢ Facilitator, which means that I am certified to run therapy groups based on the research of Dr. Brené Brown. I’m excited to connect with you and share a bit about myself and my approach. I’m here to provide a supportive and non-judgemental space where we can collaboratively navigate your unique experiences.

My Practice Philosophies:

I use a mixed bag of therapeutic approaches with clients. No one’s mental health journey is one-size-fits-all! Some of my approaches are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), liberation psychotherapy, narrative therapy, and strengths-based therapy. I believe that the client is the expert of their own life. You know your situation and beliefs best. Therapy is a collaborative process where we work together to process emotions, determine goals, and find what works best for you. Intersectionality impacts us all. Systems like race, gender, class, and culture influence us all of our lives. In our sessions, we can talk about how these systems work and shape your life. I approach each case with cultural humility. This means knowing there are limitations in my collective cultural understanding, but I’m here to provide empathy, an open mind, and listening ears. Therapy is a vulnerable process (which can sound scary and new). This is a safe environment to give your feelings words. Together we can find the sources of certain behaviors, find your identity outside of your interpersonal relationships (spouse, child, etc.), and find healing.

My Background

After growing up in San Antonio, Texas, I got my Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin. Realizing my deep passion for the intersections of social justice, culture, and mental health, I began my journey toward becoming a social worker. As a Latinx woman, I know representation makes considerable differences in seeking care. I completed my Master of Social Work (MSW) degree at the University of Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work with a focus in clinical social work. I have experience in schools, service centers, and non-profit organizations offering individual and group counseling to adults and adolescents. Additionally, I provide psychodiagnostic evaluations.

Beyond my work as a clinician, I enjoy reading, watching movies, and exploring Houston. Congratulations on taking a big step in self-advocacy and self-care by seeking therapy! I look forward to the opportunity to get to know you better.
