Licensed Professional Counselor

Hello!

My name is Andrea, and I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor here at Deep Eddy Psychotherapy. The process of finding a therapist who is the right “fit” can be a daunting task. I hope that by sharing a bit about myself and how I approach therapy you’ll be able to decide if we might work well together.

My Philosophy and Approach to Therapy

There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to what truly helps people in therapy. Everyone is different, and I respect and honor all of those differences. I tailor my approach to each individual and the issues each person brings to therapy. Some of the more common approaches I use include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, and Mindfulness. I like to inject a bit of dry humor into the therapy process as well. Laughter can be good for the soul.

I compare my role as therapist to one who helps people cross a large, seemingly impassible river. I provide a helping hand to guide, encourage, and maybe even teach you as you figure out the best way to get to the other side of that river. I don’t tell you what to do because that would take away your autonomy. I believe that you already have the answers within you, and you are stronger than you think you are. My job is to help you find your strength and resilience so that you can come closer to the person you want to be.

        Areas of Specialized Experience

In addition to being licensed as a counselor, I am board-certified as a biofeedback practitioner. Biofeedback is a mind-body intervention people can use to change their physical and emotional health. Following is the best definition of biofeedback:

“Biofeedback is a process that enables an individual to learn how to change physiological activity for the purposes of improving health and performance. Precise instruments measure physiological activity such as brainwaves, heart function, breathing, muscle activity, and skin temperature. These instruments rapidly and accurately “feed back” information to the user. The presentation of this information — often in conjunction with changes in thinking, emotions, and behavior — supports desired physiological changes. Over time, these changes can endure without continued use of an instrument.”

Biofeedback has been shown to be helpful for a variety of issues including, but not limited to, anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress, asthma, chronic pain, headaches and migraines, hypertension, insomnia, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

        About Me

I am originally from Denver, Colorado. I attended Colorado College where I earned my bachelor’s degree in history. I believe that if we don’t know our history, we are doomed to repeat it. After graduation, I worked on the communications team at a large not-for-profit in Colorado. This is where I became increasingly aware of and touched by how much people suffer in this world. This experience sparked a desire in me to help people in a more direct way, and when I moved to Texas in 2003, I began working toward my master’s degree in counseling with a specialization in biofeedback at the University of North Texas. Since that time, I have worked in private practice, university, and community mental health settings with clients ages 18-70. I am thankful to all the clients I have seen over the years and have found my clients to be my best teachers.

In my free time, I enjoy riding my bike, exercising, hiking, traveling, spending time with my family, researching family history, reading YA novels carefully curated by one of my kids, and getting sucked into Netflix to watch all sorts of movies and documentaries.

I’m looking forward to working with you!
